Pachira Aquatica - sprouting all over

Question
Hi.  I have a Pachira Aquatica and it is sprouting leaves all over even at the
bottom part.  I have seen pictures of these online with only the leaves being
allowed to sprout on top.

1. Should I trim all these leaves bellow?  If so, can I just tug it out because if I
prune it, then all I will do is encourage it to grow there some more, right?  If
by tugging it, will it make the tree un-healthy?
2. How should I properly prune the leaves?  I tugged a few of these from the
trunk and it never grew again so I guess that's a bad way.

I actually never watered the tree and it's going to be a month since I
purchased it.  The soil isn't dry so I am avoiding over watering it.  I live in Los
Angeles and the plant is indoor by the window blinds.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Raymond,

Each Plant is unique so it is hard to provide a specific answer without actually seeing a photo of your plant.

In general, you can control the growth of your Pachira by either pinching out or cutting off new growth that emerges in places where you don't want it. You may have to be persistent in doing this over and over again.

This pruning and pinching will not affect the health of the plant in any way. It will only affect its appearance.

Your Pachira should dry out approximately every 7 - 14 days. If it is taking longer than that, then the roots are vulnerable to root rot.

Possible causes of soil staying moist for too long are:
1. The pot is too large.
2. The pot does not have drainage holes.
3. The soil is too dense.
3. The plant is not getting enough light.

Check all of these conditions. If you are not sure what to do after you have determined the cause, let me know.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions. If you would like to e-mail me some photos, I may be able to provide some additional insights.
