QuestionI have emailed Will Creed Photos as well as some specifics. I rescued 2 messangeana cane plants (plastic pot they were in was cracked). I put both plants in one container but am afraid they are in danger. Both plants had 3 trunks.....one in each pot was almost mush. I wanted to know if I could do anything to help them from going into shock! I put them in a 16 inch pot with miracle grow and water them just enough to moisten the soil. I wonder if superthrive would help? I also need help on identifying a plant in horrible shape and what can I do to help it!
Thanks much!
Jen
AnswerHi Jen,
Thanks for the photos.
Your corn plants look okay, but you have to be very careful not to keep the soil too moist. That is very easy to do because there is a lot of excess soil in the pot that will act like a sponge and retain the water for a long time.
The top third of the soil should dry out within two weeks maximum. If it doesn't, then root rot will gradually set in and you will slowly loose the canes. If you added any soil on top of the original root balls, then remove that soil. In fact remove all soil on top until you get very close to the top roots. It is very important that the top of the soil dries out as soon as possible, so removing excess soil will help. So will bright indirect light.
I assume that the new pot has drainage holes. If it does not, then you are really asking for trouble!
Your other plant is a Dieffenbachia. It looks to be suffering badly from inadequate light and/or soil that is not drying out sufficiently.
