Grandfathers pipe plant

Question
I came to your Q/A of 2/12/07 as I googled to see a picture of a plant I was just given at a plant swap.  The donor called it Clethra (I think) -- I know it started with a C and the 2nd name was fragrans.  I was given a growing tip of about 5 leaves reminiscent of a toad lily's leaves.  Can you help identify?

Answer
Hi Martha,

As I indicated in my 2/12 reply, I am unable to find any references to a plant by the name "grandfather's pipe." Likewise, there are no plants listed as Clethra or anything similar. Fragrans is a common addendum to many species names so it is not helpful in identifying your plant.

Is this plant an indoor tropical plant or one that you plant outside? If the latter, I cannot help you as my expertise is limited to indoor plants. If the former, then  please email a photo to me at [email protected].

Regards,
Will Creed
