QuestionA friend of mine is willing to give me a vine from a pathos and I am wondering the best way to propagate it and start my own pathos. Do I take the vine, roots and all, and replant it or do I use cuttings? Thanks in advance.
AnswerHi Frank,
It is not a good idea for your friend to try and pull out a Pothos vine with roots intact. The problem is that the roots are intertwined with the roots of other vines in that pot and very difficult to separate.
A single potted Pothos vine will never be any more than a single Pothos vine. It will grow longer, but it will not branch or produce additional vines.
To create a nice-looking Pothos plant, you need to have many vines or stems rooted together in a single pot. I would say six is the minimum and a dozen or more would create a much fuller plant.
Multiple cuttings can be rooted together in water. When the roots are an inch or more long, the cuttings can be moved into a small (3 or 4 inch) pot filled with damp potting mix.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
