-----Question-----
I have a Yukka that has outgrown the house at 7 feet tall. I replanted it outside. Now 1 month later I am finding that the tops of the side shoots are all going mushy and look like they are rotting. What should I do to keep it alive? thanks
-----Answer-----
Kris,
Yucca plants cannot stand freezing temperatures. Did it freeze? If so you cannot keep it alive. Yucca plants should be pruned and kept indoors if you live in a cold climate. They can only go outdoors during the summer.
If you do not live in a cold climate then it is over watered. This is a desert plant and likes to be treated like a cactus.
Cut all the mushy parts off back to solid firm tissue and then be patient, it will grow back if not frozen and if you cut back on water. If there is no solid firm tissue you will have to purchase a new yucca and start over. Good luck.

AnswerKris,
No, that shouldn't kill it. Just cut the mushy tips off and be patient, it will regrow. It sounds like it needs cut back anyway. If you are in an area that regularly freezes it needs to go back in a pot so you can take it indoors when it is freezing. It should go in an 18 inch diameter pot and be cut down by about half. That will force it to send out side shoots. By the end of the summer you will never know it was damaged. Good luck.
