QuestionMy girlfriend and I need you to settle an argument. She claims it better to water plants small amounts frequently while I believe it best to drench plants less often. Who is paying for dinner out?
Thanks,
Steve
AnswerHi Steve,
I am hoping this is a good-natured argument because I hate to get in the middle of a family feuds!
In general, it is best to water a plant throughly until water drains through the drainage holes. Then wait until to upper level of soil has reached an appropriate level of dryness before watering again.
However, it is possible to water plants successfully as your girlfriend suggests. This can be appropriate in cases where the plant is in a pot that is too large. But this is a risky way to water and can lead to root rot and/or underdeveloped roots.
Finally, I will note that if a particular person has success with their plants using an unorthodox technique, then I suggest that they stick with it. Who am I to argue with success?!
I have written an article on watering potted plants that I will email to anyone who sends a request to my address below.
