Ficus benjamina propagation

Question
Hi Will,

My Ficus benjamina needs some minor pruning and I think I'll start some new plants with tip cuttings. (As if I need more plants - I must be out of my mind!) I have successfully rooted a Ficus once before in a peat/perlite mixture and tenting the cutting until it rooted, however, wonder if rooting tip cuttings in water is also a viable propagation method for Ficus. I couldn't find this information in articles you wrote on Ficus care and  plant propagation.

Thanks for your help,
Jessie

Answer
Hi Jessie,

Ficus tip cuttings do not root readily in water. It is possible, but the odds are against it. Typically, the cutting loses its leaves before the roots develop well enough to absorb water.

I recommend that you stick with the tried-and-true method that you described using a clear plastic tent.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions. I
