Is my bamboo palm dying?

Question
Do you think that the plant needs to be directly in front of the window, or would it be ok to have it about 3 feet in front of a different window facing the same direction?  The only reason I ask is because I have 3 cats that are very interested in my plants and I'm worried that if they have easier access to the plant from the window sill that they will gnaw it all to hell.  I have also heard rumors that spraying a mixture of lemon juice and water on the plants will keep pets from trying to eat them?  Any more advise?  Thanks so much .

-----Question-----
I was given a plant that seems to be a palm tree to "foster" through out the winter.  When I received the plant it was very luscious, and vibrant.  It seemed to be doing pretty good until about a month ago when many of the leaves started to turn yellow.  I have tried to trim all of the yellowing leaves off, and new leaves seem to be opening up...but it is really starting to look sparce and kind of sick.  I have no idea what kind of plant it is, or what I can do to help it.  I have sent a few pictures and I hope that helps.  Thanks!

Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for the photos. Your plant is a bamboo palm or Chamaedorea erumpens.

It is thinning out for two reasons - too little light and too much water.

I see there is a nearby window, but your bamboo palm is tucked into the corner where it does not get enough light. Try moving it right in front of the window. Just as it has taken a while for the effects of inadequate llight to show up, so it will take a while for the effects of proper light to appear.

I don't know your watering routing so I cannot  be sure of this, but I believe you are keeping the soil too moist. The pot is a bit too large and that means it takes longer for the soil to dry out. Let the top 2-3 inches of soil dry out in between waterings. Improved light will also help it dry out sooner.

Answer
Hi Steph,

Three feet away but directly in front of the window would be better than where it is now, but closer would be even better. Do the best you can. But be careful with the watering as that is equally important.

I am not an expert with pets, so I don't know if the lemon spray is effective.
