QuestionI just read a question submitted by someone else, but it didn't answer my question fully. I just got some indoor azaleas for Valentines day, so I haven't even had them a month. I keep them inside next to the window since I live in WI and we just got a ton of snow plus it's too cold outside. I know I over-watered them, because at first I thought I was under-watering them, and realized that they can't be in water too long. I'm scared to re-plant them because I don't want to ruin them, they're in a plastic pot (they came in it) and they don't have a water dish thing underneath. I don't know anything really on house plants. Now my pretty pink flowers are all wilted, the leaves are starting to get brown on the tips, and it's all pointing down. Can I save it? Plus, when do I know when to prune, and how do I prune? Help me! Thank you so much for your time!
AnswerJessica,
Azaleas are difficult plants. The watering needs to be very even. As for pruning they do not need pruned until they have finished blooming and the plant has put out new growth.
when you do just use sharp scissors or pruners. You really do not need to prune at all unless you are trying to keep the plant small. Repot it after April 1st and use sandy cactus soil. Put it in a pot no more than 2 inches larger than the pot it is in now. You can set it on a plate or in a dish but empty it an hour after you water it so it is never sitting in a tray full of water. Do not wait till it is bone dry to water it. They hate swamps and deserts. It also does not like full sun, it can sit next to a north or east window but not a south or west window. Good luck.
