QuestionHi I have an Anthurium Cleopatra in our office at work. It sits on top of a file cabinet in front of a large window facing North. It is in a 6 inch pot. We don't over water it. Lately it is growing very lanky. The stems are growing very tall but it is not very "full" looking. It has not bloomed in more than a year as well. What am I doing wrong?
AnswerHi Marcy,
Legginess is usually due to inadequate light or age. If the window is uncovered and the plant is within a couple of feet of the window, then the light should be adequate. However, even in good light, Anthuriums grow taller, but not wider so it is a matter of time before they start to look leggy. They can be cut back and new growth will emerge just below the point of the cut. So cut back to the point where you would like to see new growth come in.
To promote flowers, it will need the brightest possible light while still protecting it from direct sun. Use a dilute fertilizer with a high middle number (15-30-15, for example) monthly at half strength. You can also try providing about 4 to 6 weeks of cooler temps (55 degrees) to help promote flowers. Finally, keep your Anthurium potbound to help induce flowering.
