purchasing a house plant

Question
Dear Darlene-

I am hoping you can help me to make an informed decision regarding the purchase of a house plant(s).  I currently live in an approx. 600sq ft. apt in the metro-Phoenix, AZ area.  I am interested in acquiring a house plant suitable for growth inside in a desert climate and that is known for it's air-purification qualities.  Also (another twist), one that is NOT toxic to my young cat.  Any suggestions?  I hope this one is not too convuluted!  Thanks.

Answer
Dawn,

Most cats are fastidious creatures and are careful what they eat. Poisoning in cats is therefore generally rare. Young cats, and especially indoor cats are most at risk as they may chew houseplants through curiosity or boredom. The cat will most likely be toxic to the plant. They do tend to break leaves off regularly. Hanging basket plants work well. The only plants that are on the list that clean the air and also not on the poisonous to cats list are below:
Chlorophytum comosum   spider plant
Chamaedorea sefritzii   bamboo or reed palm
Sansevieria trifasciata    snake plant

Plants not on the clean air list (but probably because they have not been tested ) but not poisonous to cats are:
Bamboo,  Begonia,  Coleus, Geranium, ferns, and African  Violets.

Good luck.
