brown worms

Question
Ever since I brought home my bird of paradise plant, i've notice inch to 2 inch long ( 1 cm wide) dark brown worms on my hardwood floors.  Over the past month they seem to be near or around my plant.  Also, the plant leave all of teh sudden turned yellow and now brown and looks like that leaf is dead.

Are the worms from the plant.  If so, are the worms killing my plant.  Or is there something else going on?

Thanks,
Kevin

Answer
Hi Kevin,

The presence of worms or other critters in the soil of a potted plant indicates that the grower cut corners by not using sterilized, critter-free potting soil. It also suggest that they may have cut other corners. This is grounds for getting a refund on the plant, if you choose.

The worms are not damaging to the plant, although they are not something you want inside the house. The best way to treat them is to plunge the pot up to its rim in a tub of plain water and leave it for about 20-30 minutes. This will drive the worms to the surface in search of air.

One dying leaf is not a cause for concern. Several leaves may be a problem. But without more information about your plant and how you care for it, I cannot determine the cause.

Bird of paradise prefers very bright light. You should keep it tightly potted and water it when the top inch or two of soil gets dry. However, if it is not a quality plant, there may not be anything you can do to keep it looking good.

Good luck with it and let me know if you have further questions.
