Mailing cuttings?

Question
Hi,
I have a jade plant that is quite old and large.  I would like to take some cuttings and mail them to a friend, but not sure if they will survive.  What do you think - is this something I should attempt, and if so, what would be the best way to do it?
Thank you so much!
Andrea

Answer
Andrea,

I have sold a lot of cuttings on ebay and they travel fine. I would send them by priority mail so they get there fast. Jade cuttings need to lay and heal over the cut before being planted anyway so they will do that during their travel. I would simply take the cuttings in the morning, wrap the cuttings individually with either tissue paper or paper towels, put them in a box and mail them all in the same day. My only caution would depend on where you live and where the recipient lives. Mail is transferred by unheated trucks and airplane holds, it is subject to freezinge. Jade cuttings cannot stand to freeze. Unless you live in a tropical area and the recipient also lives in a tropical area and the travel will not pass through a cold area I would wait till after April 1st. The cuttings would probably root faster after April 1st when the days are getting longer and plants are more actively growing. Good luck.
