QuestionI have had this plant about 4 years and have kept it in the same place. I have repotted it one time. It is in a small 10 inch pot. It has long, long, long runners that I have wrapped around and around my 3ft.X 3ft.square coffee table, where it sits in the center. It has plenty of defused light. I think what is wrong with it is that it is TOO WET! I think that when I changed out the bowl underneath it that I caused it to.....SOMETIMES, not all the time, get too much water. I have now, raised it up so that it will not sit in any water. I have put one of those water measurers in it and it says WET! I did water it last week after raising it up,(WITH MIRICLE GROW WATER), because I was afraid not to water it. But it is still has MANY new leaves and old leaves turning yellow, all over it. The new growth on the end of the limbs look good, but my husband says the plant does not have a healthy dark green look, like it should. I water all of my plants once a week. I did not water it today, on my water day. How dry should I let it dry out? Do you feel that this is my problem. When I water it, should I use MIRCLE GROW BLUE GRANULE FERTILIZER, everytime I water it? My husband thinks that I should. I have only just been fertilizing it during the past year and it did seen to make the leaves turn alot darker. But the plant is in major trouble now! It needs HELP! I am desperate to save it, because it was given to me by our son and daughter-in-law who have BOTH passed away. It is VERY SPECIAL to us! Thanks for any HELP that you can give me. Sincerely Sheila
AnswerSheila,
Be sure to inspect it for spider mites. Look at it in strong light and look for very fine spider webs all over it. If you find them write me back and I will tell you what to do.
Yes it sounds like overwatering is your major problem. This time of year with the shorter days it does not use as much water. You need to cut back. You may already have some root damage from overwatering. Do not water again until the meter is on the edge of dry. A 10 inch pot is not small and it will take awhile to dry out. You may need to water just once every 2 weeks but check it daily. It can't be dry for long and it should read barely dry. It will help that you have gotten it up out of the water.
If this is the Miracle Grow that you mix with water the box should have 2 sets of instuctions, one for fertilizing once a month and a diluted one for fertilizing every time you water. You can kill plants with overfertilizing. I fertilize once a month. Follow the instructions on the box. If the plant dies I suggest you buy another just like it in memory of your son and daughter in law. You can start another from that plant in the spring with cuttings dipped in rooting hormone and inserted in a fresh pot of soil. That would be insurance and could be put in another room.
Good luck.
