Aglaomena

Question
Hi,

About 7 weeks ago I purchased an Aglaonema "Nicole". For about 3 weeks now, the leaves seem to be dying-- slowly drying up (almost like burnt patches). I haven't repotted it yet, and it is not in direct sunlight--it only gets a little indirect sunlight for about 30 minutes a day- I water it once a week. Since I have never owned one of these plants before I have no idea if this is normal, or if I should be doing something differently. It is getting new leaves, but it is starting to look very skimpy--I have been cutting off the leaves that are dying/drying out. Thanks for any help and advice.

Answer
Heather,

This plant requires very even moisture. I have problems with it even though it is supposed to be an "easy" plant. It has to be in a pot with a hole in the bottom and a drain tray and the drain tray must be emptied an hour after watering. The surface of the soil must be dry when you ater again but the plant can't get too dry either. There is usually moisture further down in the soil when the surface is dry. You need to check it every couple of days and water it when the surface is just dry. It also cannot have sun actually shining on it at any time, but it does need bright light. The light must be bright enough that your hand will cast a shadow from sunup to sundown. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.

Darlene
