My Yucca cane plant is dying

Question
Thank you for your advise. I just have one more question, could I put it in a new pot and new dirt or would that shock it too much?

-----Question-----
I've had this plant for about 8 years. I moved a year and a half ago and my plant was doiong fine until anout a month or 2 ago. I have not moved it or changed the lighting around it. I water it once a week I'm not sure on the exact amount but less than a juice jug. The leaves are wilting and going yellow the ones on top are a very light green while the ones under those are dying off. I noticed the stock is soft at the top but firm in the middle and at the bottom. Please let me know if there is something I can do to save it. If you need any more info please let me know.

Tanya,

The symptoms you describe are from overwatering. In the winter watering once a week is too often. Mine gets watered every 2-3 weeks. It needs to dry out totally between waterings. In the winter indoors it gets a lot less light because of shorter days so you have to cut back the water. You didn't say how big it is. If there is still green leaves on top you may be able to save it. Set it in your bathtub and remove the drain tray from under it to drain as much water off as possible. Leave it sit overnight. Then put it back in the drain tray and set it in front of a south facing window.  Water it in 3 weeks, no more than you have been giving it. Then water every 3 weeks for the rest of winter. As the yellow leaves dry out remove them. If the stalk firms up and the top remains green it will make it. If the stalk collapses it is too late. If it survives till spring let me know and I will tell you what to do to make it prettier over the summer. Good luck.

Answer
Tanya,

I would not totally repot it at this point, that might finish it off. I might try to remove swome of the soggy soil and replace it with dry soil but that is the most I would do. If you do that make sure you replace the soggy soil with dry sandy cactus soil. The best time to repot any houseplants is between April 15th and June 15th when the days are longer and the roots are actively growing. Good luck.
