QuestionHello Darlene
I want to start by saying that i viewed the way you responded to other questions and decided to search no further for the best person to help me as you done others so
I am a beginner with raising house plants, therefore i am not qualified in determining the type of plants i own, but I do live in the city and purchased these plants from a plant store on my block. The plants are in a 4" pot i believe, i call them hanging plants because they are fairly long hanging off the pot and pretty full on top. I had the plants for about 3 months now and they have been doing well in growth. I use to water the plants about 2 times a week. then i was told it was too much and started watering them weekly. I began to notice that the plants leaves would drop fairly well and when i put water they perk back up in a matter of a hour so I started to wait for that sign before watering them. Is that correct?
Also inside the pot there is some white stuff all over the place more now then when i purchased the plant 3 months ago.Do that mean I should buy new soil?
Further more, the leaves are beginning to turn yellow what is the reason behing that? I figure maybe it was time to change the direction of the plants. What do you suggest?
The plants were facing east toward the window now they are more south west toward the window. can you give me some kind of insight on stopping the plants from yellowing and by the way the yellow leaves i pull off figuring they may spoil the greener ones.
Thank You
Angel M
AnswerAngel,
Yellowing leaves usually means too little water. I suspect you are waiting a bit too long to water. Once a week should be fine and make sure you water them thoroughly so all the soil in the pot is moist. I assume that the pot has a drain hole and a drain tray under it. Water enough that a bit of water goes in the drain tray and an hour later empty the drain tray. If you want to email me a picture to
[email protected] I will be happy to identify it. All plants can sit in the same spot but need to be turned 1/4 the way around every 2 weeks so they do not grow toward the sun.
Do you live in an are with hard water?? If so the white is mineral residue from the water. You can get rid of it by setting the plant in the sink without the drain tray and watering it a lot so a lot of water rund through the soil and out the drain hole and down the sink drain. That will dissolve the mineral buildup and it will be fine.
Yellow leaves will not spoil the green ones but they are ugly and will not turn green again so I would also remove them. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
