QuestionI recently purchased two tree-like plants from a couple that was moving. They are very large and look quite tropical. The previous owner said that she put them outside on her deck in the summer. I have only had them a week and am not sure what they are or how to take care of them. I will be sending pictures of them as well. Thanks for any input you can provide.
AnswerHi Erin,
Thanks for sending along the photos. That makes my job a lot easier and it means I can be more helpful.
The plant with the broader leaves is a Schefflera actinophylla or umbrella plant. The one with the narrow leaves is a Dracaena marginata.
Both do best in very bright indirect light with a few hours of direct sun. Right in front of an east or north window would be best for both.
If you put them outside, wait until night temps are above 50 degrees and keep them both in shade where they are not exposed to outdoor direct sunlight even for a short time.
Keep both of them in their existing pots. Allow the top inch of the Schefflera soil to dry out before watering. For the Dracaena, allow the top third of the soil to dry out before watering. That means you will water the Schefflera more frequently than the Dracaena.
If you fertilize (and it is not necessary), use it at half strength monthly.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
