QuestionHi,
I emailed Will, but he never replied, maybe you can help. I have an indoor palm tree and there are tiny white spots, some in clusters near the base of the plant and bottom leaves. A closer look shows that the white spots have a small tan/brown center. Im wondering if this is spider mites and if so, are they a harm to humans or pets. I read some of the other questions and answers and noticed that there are a few ways of handling it. Which method is best? Thank you for your time.
AnswerHi Laura,
I'm sorry that you didn't receive an answer from Will, he is usually very good about answering his questions.
Are the white spots webs or spots on the leaves? Are the on the upperside or underside of the leaves?
If the spots are not webs then they are probably a fungus. The brown centers could be fruiting spores.
A product that would take care of both spider mites and fungus is a 3 in 1 spray made with Neem oil extract. I think the brand name is Garden Safe and you can find it in the garden section of most stores.
Normally I would recommend washing the plant with a strong spray of water to remove as many of the insects as possible but since there is a chance it is fungus I would advise against it unless you know for sure the spots are webs.
Repeat treatment every 5-7 days.
I hope this helps. If You have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
