QuestionHi Tracy- we remodeled our family room and there is a corner next to a large window that needs something! I am not a confident plant owner and do not know what I should look for in a house plant for this room. I'm looking for something with height to fill the space, but do not want to have to worry about dropping leaves onto the new sofa.
I have not made the time to figure this plant thing out on my own, tripped across this website and would love your help! I would like to start learning, investing in and caring for some easy house plants.
Thanks for your time,
Megan
AnswerHi Megan,
What kind of plant you can use in this corner really depends on the amount of light that this corner gets. If you have a nice bright corner and the window gets any exposure except northern you could probably put a Madagascar Dragon Tree in the corner. You can easily find one that has the height you want. You can use a Majesty Palm if you like but it will take more care than a Dragon Tree and needs lots of humidity. You may also get dried Palm fronds that will crumble onto that new sofa.
If the corner is not that brightly lit or the window has northern exposure a good choice would be a large Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen). They are very full, lower light plants that come in many varieties and are very easy to care for. They are not very tall plants, only about 2-3 feet, but you can put one on a nice pedestal type plant stand and that should give you the height you are looking for. An Aglaonema will also tolerate medium to bright light if you want to use one and the corner gets bright light. I have a large Peacock Aglaonema on a white marble pedestal stand in a bright corner of a guest room and it is stunning.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
