Peace Lilly Care

Question
I am clueless about plants.  My father died and now I have a peace lilly that I very much want to survive.  The leaves nearest the bottom and a few futher up are turning yellow with bits of brown/black.  I got the plant on the 8th of this month.  I watered it on the 12th and again on the 24th (by this time it was very dry).  The water seems neither very dry nor moist now.  I used miracle grow on the 24th.  Each time I watered it from the top without placing a saucer underneath it.  It is in a very bright room, but it gets no direct sunlight. It seems that there is almost no room in its pot.  All of that said, what am I doing wrong and what do I need to do (how often should I water it, How moist should the soil be, etc.)?  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Katherine,
I am sorry for your loss. You really can't water plants on a set schedule. You water until water comes out the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot; allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry before watering again.
Fertilizer should be given ONLY to healthy plants during an active growth period. Fertilizer will not fix an unhealthy plant, it will only cause further harm.
Peace Lily like bright light so the room it is in should be fine. A lot of time the trick is to find a place the plant likes and leave it there.
Your Peace lily probably needs to be repotted. Repot it into a pot that has drainage holes at the bottom. If you want to use a decorative ceramic pot that has no drainage holes then make sure you get one large enough to be able to set the plant's plastic pot down inside it. Put a layer of pebbles in the bottom of the ceramic pot before putting the plastic one inside it. If you like, you can use green moss or Spanish moss to fill the space inside around the plastic pot. You can also cover the soil and top rim of the pot with either kind of moss.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please do not hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy
