house palm tree

Question
I bought a palm tree that came in a box that states house palm, and states not to give the plant any light and to keep it in the shade.  The plant was in a plastic bag and the box stated that the plant was okay to be transported and should remain in the bag until transpanted.  The pot I have the plant in is about 8 inches in diameter.  When I transplanted the plant I used soil that feeds plants naturaly.

-----Question-----
I purchased a indoor palm tree on November 6 in FL and was transplanted on Nov 8 when I came home to VA on Nov 8.  The palm is only about 6 in.  I read the directions on the box that was provided to only water when repotting and only twice a week from the top and only if the soil is dry and to use a pot that drains.  The plant is dying and it looks like a part of it has mold growing on it.  Can it be saved?

Welcome home, Brandy!

There are  many different kinds of palms with varying light and water requirements, so without knowing what species you have, I cannot tell you how to care for it. If you can send a photo of it (including its pot) to me at [email protected], that would help a lot.

Also, tell me if you repotted it, what diameter pot it is in, and describe the light that it receives and how you have been watering it.

Will Creed

Answer
Hi Brandy,

OK, I understand better that you purchased a bare-rooted cutting wrapped in plastic and you then potted it up in an 8-inch pot and used a potting soil that contains fertilizer.

For a 6-inch plant, an 8-inch pot is way too big - a 3 or 4-inch pot would be more appropriate. When properly potted, the plant should be watered thoroughly as soon as the top half-inch of soil feels dry. The presence of mold suggests that the soil quality may not be too good and that it was being kept too moist.

"Any light" and "shade" are not accurate descriptions of light for a plant. If I knew exactly what palm species you had, I could tell you very specifically what light it needs.
