QuestionMy neighbor has several stromanthe in her yard (SW Fla) and she said to help myself. Can I just slice some off with a shovel and transplant that way? Thanks for your help
AnswerHi Patty,
You can dig up some but since I don't think your neighbor would be happy about you digging up her yard I would recommend taking cuttings and rooting them.
When you cut the Stromanthe make a slanted cut just below the node, a slight swelling bump in the stem.
Dip the end in rooting hormone. Place the cutting in water, distilled water is best, and change the water about every other day. Wait until the roots are about 1 inch long before you remove the cutting from the water and plant in fresh soil. You can also stick the cutting in soil. The cuttings need high humidity. One way to keep the humidity high around the cuttings is to loosely cover them with a plastic bag.
I would also recommend that you only take 1-2 cuttings at first, once they root then you can go back and get a few more.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
