saving a sweet potato plant

Question
Can a sweet potato plant be saved for next year?  Was wondering if they were dried out or if soak in water till they can be replanted next season?? Let me know thanks Debbie

Answer
Debbie,

My sweet potato vines are in hanging baskets and I keep them on my sunny south facing back porch all winter here in north east IN. It is cool, in the 60's and drops to the 50's at night. I keep them on the dry side. Giving each plant about a cup of water every 10 days or so. They get quite a few brown leaves and drop them but as long as they are still living I put them outside in the spring and they start growing quickly and are soon beautiful. If they dry out totally they will die and if you soak them in water they will rot. Just treat them like a cactus, with good sun, cool temps and somewhat dry and they should survive till spring. Good luck.

Darlene
