Problem with my house plant

Question
I have a house plant that is called a corn plant. There is yellow like mushrooms growing out of the soil. (about 3" tall). Is this harmful to my plant and my 10 yr. old daughter has asthma. Help don't know what to do. Thank you Michelle

Answer
Hi Michelle,
Mushrooms on the soil will not harm your plant but it is definitely not good for your daughter.
There are a couple of ways to deal with this problem.
When you remove the mushrooms from the surface of the soil put a plastic bag over the mushroom then pick off the mushroom while it's inside the bag, immediately close the bag and dispose of it. If you pick off the mushrooms without a bag then it will release it's spores making the problem worse.
Repot the plant with fresh sterile soil and a sterile pot. This may work and the mushrooms wont come back.
If the mushrooms do reappear or you want to make sure they don't come back then I would recommend that you use  Consan 20. It is an antifungal I have used before with good results. Mix according to the directions on the package and spray the soil, pot, plant trunk/stem and the area around the plant. That should kill the fungus and it's spores.
You can probably find Consan 20 at your local nursery or garden center. Consan 20 can also be used all around the house and outside, not just for plants. Hospitals use it in routine cleaning.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy
