QuestionHi! I've had my corn plant for about 2 years. Lately alot of the leaves are dying
despite watering, etc. One cane, the bark feels loose and I think that it might
be dying/dead. The other two canes-the bark is not loose but some the
leaves are dying. What can I do to save my plant? I have a sentimental
attachment to this plant (silly, I know) but I want to try and save it. Any help
would be great! Thanks!
AnswerHi Mary Jane,
I am hoping that it is not too late already. I am concerned that whatever has caused the one cane to die may also cause the other two to die as well.
First, make sure it is getting enough light. Corn plants do not require as much light as many others, but they still do best in bright, but indirect light. It should not be more than 6 feet from the nearest unobstructed window.
Keeping the soil too moist is the most common reason for corn plant failure. If you have ever moved yours into a larger pot, then there is a very good possibility that the extra soil added is retaining mmoisture for too long and rotting the roots. If you added soil to the top surface of the original rootball, then scrape it off and get down to where the top roots begin to show just a bit.
The soil should dry out about a third of the way down from the top before you water.
The dead cane is best removed by rotating or twisting it in place and then pulling it straight up and out. Then collapse the soil surrounding the vacated hole into the hole.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
