QuestionI have growen my been plant from a little thing. I have just let it grow into a big bueatiful plant. With out any change one of the stocks died and now another one is dropping leafs and looking bad. What can I do, I love this plant?
AnswerHi Michelle,
From what you have described it sounds like your plant has root rot. Root rot is most often caused by overwatering. Very gently, disturbing the roots a little as possible, remove the plant from it's pot and look at the roots. They should be white or light colored and firm. If they are dark colored and mushy you have root rot. If only part of the roots have rot, then you might be able to save the plant. Trim off all the rotten parts of the roots, cutting about a 1/2 inch into the healthy root. Repot the plant with fresh soil into a pot 1 size smaller than the pot it was in before. Keep the plant out of direct sunlight and only water it just enough to keep it from wilting. When the plant sprouts new growth, return to normal care appropriate for the plant and be careful not to overwater the plant again. If more than half the roots are rotten then the only way to save the plant is to propagate the healthy portion of the plant.
If the roots look good and healthy, then carefully check the plant for insects.
I hope you are able to save the plant. If any of this is unclear to you or you need additional information let me know.
Let me know if I have been helpful.
