I am not sure I understand your intention here. Are you seeking to get your Dieffenbachia to put out a second plant from the soil? Or is there more than one stem in the pot and you inquiring about dividing the plants? Or are you talking about air-layering, which is a technique used to get a cutting to root before it is actually severed from the stem?

Getting second plants from Dieffenbachias is easily done by taking cuttings and rooting them in water or damp soil, but your question seems to preclude using that method.

Let me know just what it is that you want to accomplish and then I will give you more specific information.
