QuestionI have a schefflerra (I live in CT) that has outgrown our home. It now stands almonst 10 ' tall. Can it be cut back without damage to the tree?? Or does it need a new place to live.
AnswerRuss,
It can very easily be cut back by up to 3/4's of the plant.
Use sharp pruners or scissors and cut just above a leaf or if the lower portion has no leaves you can cut anywhere and it will grow new leaves on those lower portions after it has been trimmed. It will end up being a bushier and prettier plant after pruning. It may take 3-4 months to grow new leaves but then you will be very happy with it. It can be pruned as often as once a year. I grow 300 houseplants a year and most go outside for the summer where they grow like crazy. They get a severe pruning every fall when they come in so they will fit in my house! Good luck with yours.
