QuestionA co-worker is having some problems with his philodendron. It does need to be re-potted. It is currently in a pot with two other plants. (I am looking for a larger pot for him). His plant has recently developed several yellow leaves that will fall off soon. Besides being crowded, what is the problem? Too much water? Too little fertilizer? The plant has direct light in the window all day long (east exposure). We are in downtown Chicago on the 2nd floor of a high-rise.
AnswerJeanne,
If it is variegated it is a pothos vine, not a philodendron. Too much water is the problem and it sounds like the pot it is in may not have a drain hole. Do not put it in a larger pot, just a pot about the same size without the other 2 plants. Make sure the new pot has a drainage hole. Putting it in too large a pot will be worse that where it is now. It likes to be somewhat rootbound and will be healthier that way. Just be sure he lets it dry out totally between waterings. I only water mine every 10 days to 2 weeks. The light sounds perfect. Fertilize once a month. Write again if you have more questions. Good luck.
