QuestionI have a plant that belonged to my Mother. She passed away about a year ago so I've adopted it. About 2 years ago she bought it through QVC. It was just a log about 4" around and 18" tall. I remember she had it in a few inches of water for about the first 6 months and it started sprouting. It now has about 6 different "branches" coming out with big green leaves. I put it in a pot with dirt about a year or so ago. It's been doing fine til about a week ago one of the "branches" started to wilt and has now turned black. I have searched the web for a week and haven't been able to find anything to help me know what to do. The only thing I think I may have done wrong is over water it. We have well water. When I saw the leaves wilting I thought it needed more water. I don't know if I should cut off the bad "branch" of leave it be. I have gone through all my Mom's papers and things and haven't found anything about this plant. It meant alot to her and now it's pretty special to me and I want to take care of it the best I can. Please help!!
Thank You, Jami
AnswerJami,
It sounds like you overwatered your plant which is either a Ti (pronounced tee) plant or a Dracaena corn plant. You can go to google and put thos in then click on images and decide which you have. Either way they don't like too much water so dry it out as quickly as possible. Cut the bad branch off. Put the plant in a very bright but not sunny location. You should be able to read a paperback sitting where it sits without extra light. In the future do not water it until it feels both dry and light weight, the roots need to breath between waterings so it needs to dry out. Good luck.
