I read your response regarding pruning indoor hybiscus plants and was wondering when they should be fertilized after or before pruning,  and what type of fertilizer is best?

Hi Ed,

For any plant, fertilizer should be used only on plants that are healthy and growing vigorously and have not been repotted in a year or more.

Your Hibiscus is now going into a reduced growth phase as the days grow shorter, so now is not the time to fertilize. Wait until the late spring to fertilize and then only at half-strength. Use a complete fertilizer (one that contains minor and trace elements) and one that has a higher middle number (15-30-15, for example).

The benefits of fertilizer are vastly overrated. I have written an article on fertilizing indoor plants that I will email to anyone who sends a request to my email address below.
