leggy violet

Question
Hi Patricia
One of the AVs I am rehabing has some very leggy leaves.  Can they be trimmed off without hurting it and if so, can they be propogated. If so I would like to give it a try

Answer
Kathy,
Yes, longer leaves can be cut off with a CLEAN knife, then put into water.  Make sure the leaf itself doesn't touch water.  It can take weeks to first see a little root, but it will happen.  The HARD part is after the roots are formed, and after you pot the leaflet into soil, getting it to survive!  I am serious.  I have propagated a lot of leaves over the last year, and only one is still living!  I do think, however, that if I spent more time with them, like maybe a nursery worker does, they would do better.  The humidity has to be perfect.  Not too much, not too little.  I have had several leaflets die because they were too moist!  And, of course, I've had several die because they were too dry!  It is quite a tight rope to walk.  But, if you can get one (or more) to survive, and they grow more leaves, and become a mature plant, then I suppose it would be all worth it!  Good luck.
PS:  Is this the Kathy who is my plant-pal?
