QuestionI recently received a calla lilly flowering plant and after thre weeks three of the florwrs are visibly dying. the leaves look healthy. It is in a non draining pot - the pot in which it was purchased - and I water it weekly - it is moist but not wet. it is in a bright position near a window. how long might I expect the flowers to last? - they are not quite white but rather greenish in colour - and when they have died how can I treat the plant in order that the flowers might bloom again.
AnswerSandra,
Calla lillies are bulbs like tulips. When they are done
blooming the leaves live for awhile to feed the bulbs then the leaves die back and the plant goes dormant. At that time you need to let the plant dry out and store it in it's pot in a brown paper bag in a dry cool location.
Let it sit for 6 months then start checking it weekly. When you see new sprouts bring it out and start watering it again. Now, in the meantime, while it is still alive now you need to set it outdoors in tray of water all day so it will get lots of sun and also fertilize it on a weekly basis. That way the leaves will get the fertilizer and sun it needs to feed the bulbs so you will get flowers again next year.
Mine came out of my basement in May when the new shoots were about an inch high. They will bloom in July and August and feed the bulbs through September then go dormant and go back to the basement for the winter in late September.
