anthuriums (flamingo lily)

Question
Hi, my flamingo lily is 3 years old, the leaves are brown at the edges, this started about 8 mths ago. I have not had any flowers since that time as well. My pot is about 2 gallons, with no drain holes. I use only moisture control dirt from miracle grow. I have moved the plant in direct, and indirect light nothing seems to help. I also read the plant is poisionous, will it hurt my house dog? I have city water, and use fertilizer sticks in the dirt. Please advise Lisa

Answer
Lisa,

No plant should be in a pot without a drainage hole. It is sitting in a swamp and I am sure there is way too much water in the bottom of the pot. The brown on the edges of the leaves indicates too much water. This plant is from Hawaii where it grows well im mostly fast draining sand, high humidity and daily misting from the frequent misty rains. Your moisture control dirt from miracle grow holds too much water and without a dain hole excess water has no where to go.

I suggest that you repot it into a one gallon pot with a drainage hole. I'm sure you will find very soggy soil in the bottom of the pot. When you repot mix your moisture control dirt from miracle grow 50/50 with play sand from a garden center such as Lowes or Home Depot.

After that sprinkle 2 tablespoons of Epsom Salts (magnesium sulfate) on top of the soil and that will trigger blooming. It would also be helpful to use Miracle Grow fertilizer for blooming plants once a month and skip the fertilizer sticks.

The plant could make your dog sick if he ate the leaves. Good luck with your plant.
