PETERS HONEY FIG FISCUS CARICA

Question
Hi ther Darlene,
I am the proud owner of a lovely potted fig tree.  I live in Michigan so it has been transported inside and positioned under a sky light.
The leaves are still green and beautiful.  It is about 4 1/2 ft. tal from ground up.  It has a fig the size of a large walnu and 2 more that are very tiny.
the leaves are rough like a fine sand paper and I would like to know.
What is the care for this tree for the winter?  What about the figs? This is the 1st year I have had it, and it was quite small when I purchased it in the early spring.
I would appreciate you advise!
Kindest regards, patti

Answer
Patti,

I have an edible fig tree that is about 6 feet tall and I am in Northeast Indiana. When the figs turn brown they are ripe and taste wonderful. I live in an old farm house that has a cellar and my fig is still outdoors until it drops its leaves then it goes in the cellar for the winter and gets a little water once a month till early spring.

It needs a dormant leafless cooler period during the winter with very little water but it does need to be kept above freezing. Temperatures in storage should be as close to 40 degrees as possible. It should be brought out in the spring as soon as it has started sprouting leaves or by April 1st and put in the sunniest location possible in your home then when there is no threat of frost it should go outside in full sun.  My tree stays in a large pot year around. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.

Darlene
