Question -
Hello,
I have a house plant that I need to know the name of.  It is about 4 ft wide and 5 ft tall.  It has leaves of about 5 that form a circle or pinwheel type of shape.  I have a picture that I can e-mail if that helps.
Thanks,
Rebecca

Answer
Rebecca,
I am so sorry for whatever reason you did not receive my reply.  I sent it over a week ago via the AllExperts website.  Actually, I received several emails this a.m. from folks just like yourself who had not gotten answers.  Whatever happened I am unsure, but I sincerely apologize!

I DID receive your photo.  From the photo and your description I am almost certain this is a SCHEFFLERA, or the common name is 'umbrella tree'.  Do not confuse it with "umbrella plant" which is different.  Scheffleras get the name from the fact that they provide dense shade for all tropical plants growing underneath them.  They are native in the jungle areas of Australia.  They love humidity, filtered sunlight, and for their soil to remain moist at all times, but not wet.   (Now, there's a fine line to try to walk!)  I had a schefflera that finally died about a year ago, but I kept it alive for several years.  I found that every fall/winter it dwindled down to look pretty pathetic, but when spring/summer came along and it was moved outdoors it thrived and put on new growth.  Please try to give this plant good sunlight while indoors, and another tip is to dust or wash off those shiny green leaves regularly.  Plants transpire, or breathe, through their leaves as well.

Good luck, Rebecca.  Should you need help with this or another plant please let me know.  It is my pleasure to help.
