Madagascar Palm (can it be left outside)

Question
We have a Madagasar Palm we let outside in the summer. It is in a 30 inch pot and it 9 feet tall. It has little light in winter and was last potted about 3 years ago. Since it has grown to the height it is we can not get it into house. We would like to known if it possible to keep it outside. We live in the Southern part of Pennsylvania with below 32 degree winters.

Answer
Hi Joe,

Dracaena marginatas can tolerate down to 45 degrees, although it is better not to expose them to temps below 50 degrees. Freezing temps will kill them very quickly.

The solution is to prune back your D. marginata to a height that will allow you to bring it indoors for the colder months. New growth will emerge on the stem just below where you make the pruning cut.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
