Bringing English Ivy cuttings indoors?

Question
I want to bring one single cutting inside from my outdoor english ivy plant.  I have a glass vase I put it in and I filled the bottom with little pebbles. (like how lucky bamboo is often paired with).
Will the cutting survive with just the rocks and some water? I don't really need it to grow, just to live as is. The vase is somewhat fragile, so I would like to avoid putting a bunch of soil in it.
I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Erica

Answer
Hi Erica,

Your comparison to lucky bamboo is apt. Lucky bamboo are nothing more than Dracaena cuttings that are rooting in water.

Hedera (English) ivy roots about equally well in plain water and will live for quite a long time in just plain water. Make sure the water is not hard or softened water. Use filtered or distilled instead. Change the water every week or so. Adding pebbles or sand doesn't matter much one way or the other.

Because not all cuttings take root, you might consider taking several cuttings and put the extras aside somewhere in a plain container of water. That way you will have some spares to replace the one in the glass vase if it should not make it.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
