tilliandsia, bromeliads, or airplants

Question
hi,

i want to ask you if you know how to properly care of tilliandsia, bromeliads, or airplants. such as water, sun, propagations, fertilization, temperature, zone, how long it takes to bloom, trouble shooting and solutions, soil (such as can you use spanish moss). Can they live inside a mist machine that is constantly making mist? anything i need to know about the plants.

   Thanks danny

Answer
Danny,

They are very tropical. They would only survive outdoors in zone 10 or 11.  For the most part they love the sun, like humidity. For water they need to be misted or dipped in water at least once a day when it is warm and twice a week during the winter. Inside a mist machine that is constantly making mist they would rot. You can put water soluable fertilizer in the water once a month. They will bloom once a year like most plants, occasionally twice a year if they are very healthy and you remove the faded flower and do not allow it to make seeds. How soon depends on how mature the plant is. Propagation, they send out off shoots after blooming and can be divided. They do well indoors in bright light with some sun. Do not let the temperature drom below 50 degrees.
