basic watering how-to question

Question
Hello!

My husband and I argue about the "right" way to water.  I water from the bottom, so the water is absorbed throught the drainage holes.  He says they should be watered from the top.  Is there one correct way?  Does it vary from plant to plant?

Thank you!

Karen

Answer
Hi Karen,

Oh-oh, am I getting into a family feud here?! LOL!

There is no single "correct" way. Either method can be used successfully. If you have had long term success with a particular method, then it is probably best to stay with it.

Top watering has the following advantages. It flushes out excess mineral salts in the soil. It reveals when the soil is saturated when you see water trickling through the drainage holes. It is faster. It assures that the soil is not left standing in water for too long, by accident.

Bottom watering will keep delicate leaves from getting wet or damaged. It will do a better job of re-wetting soil that has gotten excessively dry.

African violets are often watered from the bottom because their broad, stiff leaves make it difficult to water from the top. Otherwise, the plant species doesn't matter.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
