African Violet Pests

Question
Dear Ms. Creed,
I've had an African Violet for 2 years. It has been very exciting to see  this plant grow, and fully bloom all year long since purchasing this plant as a baby.
I have noticed very tiny white bugs in the soil,
usually seeing them more clearly after watering ( I blow on the soil and they start squirming).
I have also noticed that at the core of my plant, the new smaller leaves edges are looking yellowish-brown.
I have recently started using liquid plant food that you mix with water ( 8-14-9 twice a month), and use aged water every time I water them. They have very good lighting, and have been repoted once (only after growing out of the  first pot I purchased).

How  can I get rid of these wingless pests?
Is this causing discoloration on new leaves?
Should old leaves that look a little worn be pruned?
Do I know what I'm doing or have I just been lucky?

Answer
Hi there,

The white bugs that you see in the soil are probably larvae of fungus gnats. They are more prevalent when soil is kept too moist and when plant roots rot. They have been introduced with the soil that you used when you repotted.

If you allow the soil to dry deeper into the pot, then that will deprive the larvae of the moisture they need. It is the excess soil moisture that is causing the deterioration of the roots and leaves, not the larvae.

The pot should be in the 4"-6" range. If it is larger than that, then your AV is at high risk for root rot.

Any leaves that discolored, or soft or otherwise unattractive should be removed.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
