QuestionI have a Phalaenopsis orchid that has not rebloomed. Over a year ago, I cut the spike off about 1 1/2 inches above the bulb. Since then, a new leaf has appeared, but no new spike. I keep the plant on a windowsill that gets indirect sunlight and water about once a week. Will I get a new spike after all this time?
Thank you,
Tania Dowdy
AnswerHi Tania,
Phalaenopsis typically bloom only once per year, even in good conditions, so yours is not particularly overdue. One or two new leaves during that year's time is also normal.
The light and water you have provided is about right.
Orchids do need fairly regular fertilizing as they are usually potted in moss or bark chips that contain few nutrients. It is also possible that a new potting mix is in order, as it does tend to break down every couple of years.
I have written an article on Orchid care that explains all of this in greater detail. Contact me at me address below to obtain a copy.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
