Peace Plant and cats

Question
Hi,
I haven't had indoor plants in many years because I have cats and dogs that love to eat them. I would like to try a peace plant because they are easy to care for, but I'm not sure if they are toxic to animals. Please advise.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Connie,

Peace lilies are on the ASPCA's list of toxic plants but not on Washington's Poison Center's list.  The ASPCA lists the principle toxic action is calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, intense burning and irritation of the mouth, lips, tongue, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing.

Unofficially, I have a friend who, in 25 years of living with pets and plants (usually with at least one peace lily), never had dogs or cats show interest in munching on the leaves or flowers of a peace lily.

As always, if in doubt, use common sense by keeping plants away from pets, and particularly with cats, provide indoor greens.

I apologize for the ambiguity, but the experts do not always agree on which plants are toxic.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
