Anthurium care

Question
We just received an antherium as a gift and it is an a pot that seems too small for the roots to grow.  Should we transplant it into a larger pot?  Is weekly water sufficient, typically?  What kind of light will produce health plants and flowers?

Answer
Hi Jim,

The roots don't need a lot of room to grow. In fact, the plant will be healthier and flower more if you keep the plant quite potbound. (For a more extensive explanation of repotting, send a request for my article on thos subject to me at my address below.)

If the Anthurium is in a 5 or 6 inch pot and you have proper light, then a weekly watering is about right. Smaller pots would need watering a bit more frequently. It is better to err on the side of less rather than more water.

Anthuriums require lots of very bright, but indirect light to flower with a few hours of early or late day direct sun. A north or east windowsill would be best.

Fertilize it monthly at half-strength. Rotate it on its axis a quarter turn with each watering so it grows evenly.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
