QuestionI have 3 Ficus Trees in my office which have been a fixture here for over 8 years & they are beautiful, with little care. My question is, recently, one of the trees began producing & dropping in abundant numbers, these little green balls. These balls are the same color & size of a sweet pea. Do you know what this means or what it is? The other two Ficus trees do not have these balls.
AnswerBridget,
I could find nothing in two different texts about these little green balls, and I even used a textbook published by the Ortho Company. Keep in mind that my expertise is in African Violets, though! I actually have never even grown a ficus.
I'd be willing to bet that these little growths have something to do with reproduction, particularly since only one of your trees have it. Perhaps this is a female tree. (Don't laugh-- I'm serious)! These little balls are probably either seed pods or a type of fig; ficus is Greek for 'fig'. That gets into horticulture, and is a little over my head. I would suggest you send your question to other plant specialists in AllExperts, if you haven't already. Will Creed is an excellent one to ask, as is Darlene Kittle. Both of these individuals are master level gardeners.
Good luck. I regret that I could not offer more help.
I am attempting to send an attachment. Hope it comes through.
