care of hibiscus plant

Answer
Hi Sue,

Although Hibiscus often grow very well outside in the warmer weather where the light is very intense, I suspect that yours is adapted more to shade. Very dark green leaves indicate that your Hibiscus was grown in a shaded greenhouse and probably needs protection from direct sunlight. I suspect that if you move it to an an east or north windowsill, it will do better.

Improper watering can also cause leaf yellowing/drop. If you moved it into a larger pot, then there is a good chance that the soil is staying too moist for too long. Transplanting will also cause leaf yellowing and is not recommended for new plants. You may want to cconsider moving it back to its original pot to avoid root rot which is usually fatal.

On the other hand, allowing the soil to get too dry can also cause leaf yellowing. In a small pot, Hibiscus should be watered thoroughly whenever the top half-inch of soil feels dry.

In case you were wondering, fertilizer will not help.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
