Choosing the right indoor tree

Question
Hi Will,
My girlfriend and I have a modern look to our condo, and would like to put a larger plant/tree in the corner, with little light.  The closest window is an east facing, but it still won't get all that much light.  Can you suggest a modern looking, tall tree-like indoor plant, that requires little light?
thanks

Answer
Hi Luke,

I don't think there is much agreement om what plant species look "modern." However, a "corner with little light" is very limiting in terms of what will survive, unless you are willing to purchase a replacement every 6 months to a year.

The only tall, low light plants unavailable are Dracaena massangeanas (corn plant), Kentia palms and Rhapis palms. None of these have a particularly modern or tree-like quality to them. Even these plants will need, at a minimum, at least 8 hours of very good reading light each day.

You may have to think alternatively. Establish a location for the plant that is close to a window. Or consider using an artificial plant that requires no light. Artificials do not have the health benefits of real plants, but they are useful in situations where a certain look is desired but there is inadequate light.

Be wary of plant retailers who tell you that other plants do fine in low light. They are after the sale, not your interest!

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
