Fungus or mold on my philodendron?

Question
There is a light green substance growing on the base of my philodendron plant.  It is growing upwards. I don't know what it is.  Mold or fungus?  The plant looks overall healthy.
I live in Colorado Springs, a relatively dry climate.  There is indirect sunlight the majority of the time on my plant.  The plant may be around 8 years ago and I repotted the plant about 2 years ago.  I water it about once a week and it is city water.  The plant looks healthy, but I don't know what this substance may be....mold or fungus? I am sending you some photos to the email address you gave.  Subject: "Fungus or mold on my philodendron?"

Answer
Lori,

Your plant is not a philodendron, it is a pothos vine and if it were getting more sunlight it would be variegated. I beleive the substance may be the beginning of moss such as you get in lawns. It would go away with more sunlight.  It was hard to tell in the pictures but just in case it is a mold try spraying it with Lysol. If it is a mold it will kill it. I couldn't tell in the picture, does the container have a drain hole in the bottom? It sounds like it may be staying too wet between waterings. Lack of a drain hole would do that or allowing it to sit with a drain tray full of water between waterings. It needs to get very dry between waterings. Then if it is moss it will dry up and disappear or you can then pull it off. Try moving it to a sunnier locations and let me know how it does. Good luck.
