QuestionHi. I'm having problems finding a plant that will do well in my
dining room--the location is a fairly narrow (only 2 1/2 ' wide)
south facing window. It gets a few hours of direct sun in the fall
and winter, but in summer the sun is so high that no direct sun
comes in at all. I'm not sure if this is a low-light location or not.
I have tried jade plants, spider plants, ficus, with little success.
Plants don't die, but often look leggy or pale. The plant I'm
seeking needs to be fairly small since it will sit on a table. Any
suggestions of plant types would be appreciated!
Thank you :)
AnswerHi Clara,
If the location is immediately in front of the window, then that would be considered medium light. If it is 3 feet or more away from the window, then it would be considered low light. Jades, Spider plants, and Ficus trees can survive in medium light, but need more light to thrive.
The best low light plants that are of table size are as follows: Pothos, Chinese evergreen, ZZ plant, and Parlor palm. All are safe choices for the location you described.
If you do get a new plant, be sure to NOT repot it. Plants in lower light do best in tight pots as they will grow very slowly and not use much water.
I would be happy to advise you on the care of any plant that you ultimately purchase.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
